This is the only one that lets you keep separate track of the inventory of complete cases vs individual pieces from open cases (though not the easiest method to use).

1) You'll create two Item Records, one for whole cases and one for individual pieces. We'll use "piece" for the smallest unit you sell. If the product comes in "packs" containing multiple actual pieces (such as a pack of 6 sparklers) but you only sell whole packs, then your "piece" would be the pack. If you sometimes break open the pack and sell the individual pieces (for example, one sparkler), then you can extend this approach to three Item Records, using kit items with different quantities for the pack and the case.

2) The Item Record for a piece, say XYZ, is a normal item with Inventory Tracking On and the appropriate price, cost, and UPC Code for one piece. For convenience, you can change the unit from "each" to "case" and put in the number of pieces (or packs, if a pack is your sellable "piece") as your Case Size; then you can put in the Case Cost as the Standard Cost without having to compute the individual piece cost yourself.

3) For the case Item Record, use a related name such as XYZ-CASE. Set Inventory Kit to Yes and turn Inventory Tracking back On. The single kit component will be XYZ with the Case Size as the QTY. (This is the number of sellable pieces per case.) You'll probably want to set "Show?" to No in the Kit Details.

4) The Standard Cost for XYZ-CASE will automatically be set from the Cost for XYZ times the Case Size. Set the Retail Price for XYZ-CASE as desired. (If you want to automatically be the XYZ Price times the Case Size, set its Pricing Model to "Use List Price (MSRP) with Specific Cost". If the Case has a separate UPC code from the piece or pack, put it in here. Otherwise, leave it blank and print an Artisan price tag for each case, so you can use the Artisan bar code.

5) Order and Receive by the case, using item XYZ-CASE. If you need to change the Standard Cost (as opposed to a special cost for a particular purchase), you'll have to do it in the piece item, XYZ.

6) When you break down a case into individual pieces for sale, go to the XYZ-CASE record and reduce the Qty On Hand by the number of *cases* opened. Save the record and choose "Kit Broken Down into Components" as the reason. This will subtract inventory from the Case record and add the correct number of units to the Piece record.

7) If you ever reassemble pieces back into a whole case, then reverse step 6 by *increasing* the QOH for the Case record (by the number of cases) and selecting "Kit Built from Components" as the reason.

8) Ring up sales by using the appropriate bar code or manually entering XYZ or XYZ-CASE, and inventory will be subtracted from the appropriate Item Record in pieces or cases, respectively.
