Setting up PDT for Inventory Counting

Before you begin counting inventory with a Portable Data Terminal (PDT), we have to make sure it is installed correctly. This article will walk you through the steps to install the Metrologic Optimus SP5500 Portable Data Terminal correctly and get it ready to work with Artisan POS.

Note: This article only works for the Metrologic Optimus SP5500

  • Metrologic Optimus SP5500 Portable Data Terminal requires Artisan POS version 3.1.26 or later.
  • For more information about installing & configuring PDTs, see section 5.2.5.9 of the Artisan User's Manual Version 3.0
  • Instructions on this article are intended to work only on Microsoft Windows computers.

If you have rented a PDT from CerTek, here's a reference of the equipment you should have to follow this article. Some customers have their own PDT device, if so just make sure you have the following:

Step 1: Download the driver & software needed - IMPORTANT

In order for the PDT to be installed correctly on the computer, the correct driver needs to be installed before connecting the PDT to the computer.

DO NOT CONNECT THE DEVICE TO THE COMPUTER UNTIL THE DRIVER BELOW HAS BEEN INSTALLED.

1. Download the driver from this link:

https://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/Pages/USBtoUARTBridgeVCPDrivers.aspx

Download the one for: Download for Windows XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8/8.1 (v6.7)

If you do not know whether your computer is 64 or 32 bits, go to the following Microsoft article to learn how to find out. How to determine computer architecture

unzip the folder and run the application name CP210xVCPInstaller_x64.exe OR CP210xVCPInstaller_x86.exe depending on your system.

    2. Install it on your computer.

Once the driver has been installed, the device can be connected. Follow the next steps below.

    3. Install Optimus Software:

Additionally, if you have never used this model of PDT , Optimus Software needs to be installed as Artisan will need it. You can download it from this link https://www.honeywellaidc.com/en-US/Pages/Product.aspx?category=&cat=&pid=5500&rank=&=

It is also on our Downloads Website if you have access to it, you can contact CerTek for access to the Downloads Page.

Step 2: Powering the PDT Craddle

The Metrologic Optimus SP5500 uses different connections to operate, follow this order:

    1. Connect the power adapter to the craddle

    2. Connect the power adapter to the power outlet. Once this is done, the red light PW on the craddle should turn ON.

Step 3: Connecting the Craddle to the Computer

The craddle functions as the dock for the Data Collector Device (PDT) and as the charging station, this must also communicate with the computer to transfer data to the device.

Connect the USB-to-RS232 cable to the craddle (Squeeze the RS232 connector to plug it in)

    1. First connect the RS232 to the back of the craddle

    2. Then connect the USB end connection to a computer USB port.

When device is connected to the computer it should automatically configured itself if all steps were followed correctly.

    The End:

Now the PDT should be ready to start loading the data from Artisan POS. (Not ready to start counting yet)

If you had issues with the install:

    • Disconnect the device, restart the computer and start again from step 1.
    • If it does not install correctly, contact CerTek technical support to assist you.
